Can a Pocket Notebook Replace Your Phone?
We all use our Notes app on our phone for random thoughts, lists, and things we need to remember, but could a cute lil notebook do it better?
As we are all in on Analog 2026, the Pocket Notebook enters the chat.
One night I was deep in a YouTube journaling + productivity + personal development rabbit hole, when I stumbled on a brilliant concept: the Pocket Notebook.
I didn’t note the original creator (ahem, that would have been a perfect use case for the Pocket Notebook), but search the term and you will enter an endless stream of delicious notebook content.
The idea is simple, you keep a small notebook handy to jot down anything that comes to mind. It’s different from a Common Place Book, which is a more organized, curated collection.
I didn’t have a name for it at the time, but I used to keep a Pocket Notebook in my car for jotting down anything that I needed to remember, ideas, or concepts I heard on a podcast or audiobook that I wanted to explore.
As I’ve grown more dependent on my phone, I’ve fallen off the tried and true method for miscellany.
For me, any small notebook could do, but as a notebook enthusiast, I have criteria:
It must be small, like 3X5ish
It must be inexpensive for guilt-free tossing around.
It must be pliable and squishy. No hard cover.
My current Pocket Notebook is a miniature composition notebook (pictured above) that came in a set of three at the dollar store. I couldn’t resist its cuteness even though I had no need nor plans for another notebook.
Like the composition notebook I use for my journal, it’s perfectly non-special.
I use a crisp Sterling Ink Common Planner as my daily bible, but it’s helpful to have another place to add dates on the go.
If you want your own Pocket Notebook, here two other brands I’ve used. I can’t show you my old notebooks because I transferred any important info over to my Common Place Book, and I think I threw them away. Blasphemy!
Field Notes has character and style. Thin and portable, it’s an ideal Pocket Notebook.
Moleskine has plenty of pages and beautiful color choices to capture all your brilliant moments on the go.
What do you think? Would a Pocket Notebook help you spend less time on your phone and more time thinking, dreaming, and planning?
